Works on Ultrix, how do I do it on Alpha

Dear managers:

I feel stupid asking this but we need this to work. It is an X Windows
question but I have no problem getting it to work on our Sun Sparcs
and our Ultrix boxes. I looked and tried and hacked to get the
following to work on OSF/1.

In ultrix when we log into another machine our DISPLAY environment is
set automatically without typing "setenv DISPLAY machname:0". How do
we do this on the Alpha :( . We have lots of X/Motif Windows programs
and we can't figure this one out. The `who am i | cut -f1 -d\!` doesn't
work on OSF/1.

Thanks
