I think I am about to scream. Silently though. I love the assumptions that
Digital seems to have about their product.
I upgraded my system to 3.2C last week. As you allready know I had the
(undocumented by dec?) bug affecting GCC (thanks everyone for the patch!)
now I have this.
Our user quotas have been wiped. Well not all of them.. just some. most
reset to zero, but some OK. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason
to it..
fine I thought. something's gone awry and I'll restore off backup. Isn't
it nice to run vrestore and find your quota.user and quota.group files
AREN'T BACKED UP!
I allready noticed that there's a hack to the system that means you can't
actually remove these files (ie: rm gets a permission denied) but I think
it's pretty poor to not back them up.
Something fishy is going on as the file sizes are all the same, a la:
# ls -al /var/quota*
-rw-r----- 1 root operator 262144 Sep 25 13:34 /var/quota.group
-rw-r----- 1 root operator 548864 Oct 6 17:39 /var/quota.user
# ls -al /studes/quota*
-rw-r----- 1 root operator 196608 Sep 25 13:34 /studes/quota.group
-rw-r----- 1 root operator 548864 Oct 6 17:39 /studes/quota.user
# ls -al /staff/quota*
-rw-r----- 1 root operator 196608 Sep 29 21:06 /staff/quota.group
-rw-r----- 1 root operator 548864 Oct 6 17:39 /staff/quota.user
We have approx 7 times as many student accounts as staff, so this is just
wrong, and no user quotas on /var.
what gives? does anyone have an idea? The only mention of quotas in the
3.2C release note is along the lines that "the quota files will be out
of sync if the system crashes between an unlink and a delete"(or similar)
but surely vquotacheck would fix that. Does it fix ours? no. Sure, I can
reallocate user quotas, but a lot of our users had their own quotas for
different reason, and I'd rather find some way around this.
I will just give them all the standard for their group and take the complaints
I guess. This is just a gripe.
Also I note the manual page for vquotacheck mentions a -r parameter, the
binary doesn't accept it. Both are from 3.2C (ie: the dates are Jul 25 '95)
from the 3.2C distrib. Good one DEC.
