Thanks to all who replied. It turned out to be a known problem with
the PXG+ accelerated/24-bit video card and DEC's Open3D software. I am
running OSF v3.0, but going to v3.2 was not the answer. Running
certain X clients (netscape and some window managers) would hang X,
but not the machine. Killing /usr/bin/X11/X always regained control of
the machine, but was a little drastic.
The solution turned out to be to get an ECO (engineering change order)
CD distribution of Open3D. I was told to ask for Open3D ECO 14 from
DEC. My order hadn't gone all the way through purchasing when another
victim got the distribution from his on-site DEC rep. He gave me a
copy of the lib_dec_pxg.so shared library and that was all I actually
needed.
I didn't go through the whole order process, so I can't give you
specific instructions on how to order the software if you need
it. I've been trying to get this information from our DEC rep, but so
far have been unsuccessful so I decided to go ahead and send the
summary.
I hope this is enough information to help anyone else with this
problem.
