My original problem was that I could not figure out how to create the
device special files to access the serial ports on an Alphastation 200/166
running Digital Unix 3.2c.
short answer: the correct MAKEDEV syntax is:
% MAKEDEV ace0
which creates character special files tty00 and tty01.
