Q: Shared memory, how big, and why

I got a piece of software called I-DEAS. One of its requirements
(says its diagnostic) is a shared memory size of 16200000. (I think) The default
for the operating system is set in a variable in param.h--SHMMAX--and
it's set to 4 megs. In RTFM's such as System Tuning and Performance Management,
I can't find much appropriate. Since what I don't know can hurt me, why, if
any, would I not want to diddle with this?
