Well, folks, I only got one reply in a day, so this must be a pretty
rare happening!
The original question dealt with the non-volatile ram on our
DEC 3000/400 behaving in strange and interesting ways, then, seemingly
by magic, correcting itself.
Based on Mike's reply (Thanks! =) I'd like to think the machine did
its own "init" when we typed "test" or something like that, because we
did interrupt the boot process with the reset button -- the tape drive
we were installing wouldn't let the scsi initialization move on, it
seemed, so I pressed the button.
Anyway, at least now we know the alpha isn't playing Russian Roulette
with us (down and down and down she goes; will she come up? nobody
knows..)

Same thing happens to me -- if you interrupt the boot process, via the
hardware reset button, before it's done checking and initing things, that
will happen. If you type "init" before doing anything you should be safe.
