Hello managers,
Over the holiday weekend, we had a system disk failure which now
necessitates that we restore our filesystems from tape. Both our root and
/usr filesystems were type ADVFS, and I performed regular vdumps prior to this
crisis using our Exabyte 85058 (double density, does compression) tape drive.
The vrestore of the root filesystem went ok.
The problem: when doing a vrestore of the /usr filesystem, I get
              the following nonrecoverable error:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cam_logger: CAM_ERROR packet
cam_logger: bus 0 target 5 lun 0
ctape_iodone
Hard Error Detected
UNKNOWN
Active CCB at time of error
CCB request completed with an error
Error, exception, or abnormal condition
MEDIUM ERROR - Nonrecoverable error
vrestore: unable to read from device </dev/nrmt0h>; [5] I/O error
: do you want to retry?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some more facts: We are running a Dec 3000 model 800, Digital Unix v3.2c.
We have only one Exabyte 85058 tape drive.
---->We get the same error when we try to vrestore /usr from
any of our seperate backup tapes!!! In each case,
the /usr vdump follows the root vdump on the tape.
We tried doing a vrestore from the tape to a disk on a
different SCSI bus - got same error.
We tried using dd to copy the data from the tape to a
disk file - got same error.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd really really appreciate any advice people can give me. I don't know
what this tape error means, but I suspect that our tape or tape drive has
a problem. Short of redoing a full installation, I don't know what to do.
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
