SUMMARY: DCE v1.3 on Digital Unix

Thanks to all who replied, this was really fast 8)

Short: To run /usr/sbin/dfssetup on Digital Unix 3.2C one has to create a
        dummyfile called "/.dfssetup-ignoreOSrev".

This still leaves me with lots of other problems, since it looks like
DFS isn't installable without fully installing DCE. So my main problem,
the NFS server statfs()'ing forever still remains unsolved. Another
funny thing occured with my NFS setup: whilst "cp -rp /local/disk
/nfs_mounted/huge_disk", which went on perfectly, I did a
"ls -l /nfs_mounted/huge_disk" twice. First time the contents appeared,
second try (after about 5 seconds) the NFS server hung. But "cp" went
on. Maybe this is a thread-problem ?

Question:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After getting no replies concerning my nfs problem I ended up in installing DCE
DFS. (/dce130/kit/*)

This simply isn't funny:
# uname -a
OSF1 fraggle.RZ-Berlin.MPG.DE V3.2 148 alpha
#
# /usr/sbin/dfssetup
DEC OSF/1 rev 307 or greater required to run this version of DFS
Exiting.
#
Sometimes I wonder who does quality checks at DEC.

Create the file .dfssetup-ignoreOSrev in the / directory. I think that
the dfssetup script assumes that you are using 3.0

Makes you wonder doesn't it?

>any hints ?

Yup. You need to install some ECO:s from the ECO CD :

# setld -i | grep DCE\.\*131
DCEADK131 installed DCE Application Dev Kit V1.3.1
DCECDS131 installed DCE CDS Server V1.3.1
DCEDFS131 installed DCE DFS Base V1.3.1
DCERTS131 installed DCE Runtime Services V1.3.1
DCESEC131 installed DCE Security Services V1.3.1

You still need to install the regular subsets before this though.

$ touch /.dfssetup-ignoreOSrev
$ dfssetup

It seems that Digitals DFS is a bit useless without an LFS. Using UFS
gives me NFS++. AdvFS is better but seems to be a bit shaky.

Anyone knows what the status of DEC LFS is?

You need to add the ECO for DCE (DCE131) or there is a file you can
touch in the local root to bypass the check. If you look through
the dfssetup script you'll see what you need to create.

Peter, I'm the Digital DCE product manager. Have you
reported this problem through the Digital Customer Service
Center? I will try to help you out if possible.

DFS is goig to be a lot of fun if you aren't running something on the
order of 3.2c or so. you may want to consider rolling
back to 3.0. Also, get the DCE recommended patches for your
DCE kit. I believe that there are also recommended kernel patches as well
that you should consider installing. I should warn you that there
may still be memory leaks with DFS, so you may bneed to go to a scheduled
reboot cycle (yippe)e).
