Hi managers,
we have a small problem concerning mailadresses in our domain.
Our policy to handle mailaddresses here is the following:
1. get an account on our VAX/VMS cluster
2. username :== lastname + "_" + abbrev(firstname)
3. add "_at_mpimg-berlin-dahlem.mpg.de" to your VMS accountname
and the result is the official mailaddress of the user.
(That's why I'm MARQUARDT_P_at_mpimg-berlin-dahlem.mpg.de)
4. read/send mail from one of the VMS hosts
Now, since lots of users here work on unix hosts, they tend to
supply their mailaddress directly to their host. This isn't allowed,
but some people just don't like the idea to read their mail on VMS.
So some people set their forward on the VMS machine to the unix host
they mostly work on. This works fine, as long as they fill in their
"Reply-To:" field to point to the above mentioned address.
But... if someone tries to handle mailinglists, the list simply doesn't
read the reply-to: header so any replies to a list rebounce with an error.
The problem is the following:
User Peter Marquardt has the official mail address:
MARQUARDT_P_at_MPIMG-BERLIN-DAHLEM.MPG.DE
He is forwarding his mail to a DUnix host called "warthole" to
his Unix-Account "wwwutz".
Now, reading his mail on the Unix host he would like to reply
to a specific mail. Doing this, the mailer on Unix fills in
From: Peter Marquardt <wwwutz_at_warthole.rz-berlin.mpg.de>
Now this is exactly what I want to have changed to
From: marquardt_p_at_mpimg-berlin-dahlem.mpg.de
This would require a sort of translationlist in the form of:
localunixname officialmaildaddress
wwwutz marquardt_p_at_mpimg-berlin-dahlem.mpg.de
There is no possibility to map the VMS-Usernames directly to
Unix, since Unix allows 8 char max. for it.
The configuration and administration of this mailaddress-translation
should be maintained only by a superuser, since this could result
in "fake" mails. I know how to fake mailaddresses by hand, but I want
the system to do this officially for me. so the result would be transparent
for all mailprograms running on the unix host.
Any chance ?
cheers, Peter
