We have ECO SSRT0359_OSF1032C (syslog) problems...

Hi all,

Yesterday I installed the syslog patch on our machines running
DU 3.2c. I then began noticing that sendmail was dumping core in
/var/spool/mqueue. I didn't take time to explore the problem further -
instead I just backed out of the patch and restored the original libraries.
But even after undoing the patch, we can no longer use mail! help!
Can someone please advise me what to do? Here are the symptoms:

1. /var/spool/mqueue contains these files:
total 18
drwxr-xr-x 2 root system 8192 Dec 6 16:57 ./
drwxr-xr-x 13 root system 8192 Nov 26 23:03 ../
-rw------- 1 root system 0 Dec 6 16:57 qfAA00663
-rw------- 1 root system 0 Dec 6 16:57 qfAA00665
-rw-r--r-- 1 root system 66 Dec 6 16:57 xfAA00663
-rw-r--r-- 1 root system 92 Dec 6 16:57 xfAA00665

2. the following mail-related processes are running:
               336 ?? S 0:01.72 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               451 ?? IW 0:00.02 sh -c /usr/bin/mail uucp
               453 ?? S 0:02.86 -sendmail uucp (sendmail)
               518 ?? S 0:01.43 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               519 ?? S 0:02.95 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               523 ?? S 0:02.29 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               524 ?? S 0:02.29 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               526 ?? S 0:01.16 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               532 ?? S 0:01.22 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               603 ?? S 0:00.40 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
               605 ?? S 0:00.83 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
wolinski 628 ?? IW 0:00.02 -accepting connections (sendmail)
wolinski 638 ?? S 0:00.10 -running queue: /var/spool/mqueue
wolinski 635 ttyp2 S + 0:00.13 -sendmail wolinski_at_umich.edu (send

3. After you finishing typing you message (with /usr/bin/mail) and try to
send it off, mail just hangs and never returns to the shell prompt.
4. Incoming mail is never received by users.

How can I get mail working again? I've tried doing:
% /sbin/init.d/sendmail stop ; /sbin/init.d/sendmail start
but that doesn't help.

Thanks for any help! Dave Wolinski <wolinski_at_umich.edu>
