Thanks to

        Arrigo Triulzi <arrigo_at_lpac.ac.uk>
        Kurt Watkins <watkins_at_chop.swmed.edu>
        Rob Naccarato <naccarat_at_viking.sheridanc.on.ca>
        Andrew Sheaff <sheaff_at_eece.maine.edu>

for their immediate reply (and to all others of course whose mail
might have got lost while I was fiddling with the mail system :-).
The clue was that not the sendmail patch is bad but the syslog patch
I installed before. Funnily, the unpatched sendmail worked with the
bad syslog(3).

I rolled back the syslog patch (installed my old libc's) and now
sendmail works fine again. Another oddity observed since the syslog
patch disappeared at the same time: when I su'ed to root the `w'
command still showed me as the user logged in at the terminal,
and (worse) comsat still sent notifications of mail destined for me
to the terminal.

The question is now, will there be a working patch to syslog(3)?

Thanks again, Steffen.
