The problem was a /var/adm/binary.errlog that was filling up the
whole /var partition.
There were many different suggestions on this one.
Thanks to Jim Johnson for the winning suggestion.
(after copying the existing file elsewhere
cat /dev/null > binary.errlog
Other responses had to do with restarting binlogd, deleting the
file and rebooting the system, etc.
