[SUMMARY] rwhod daemon dying

Dear fellow OSF1 managers,

On Dec. 6 I posted a message indicating our rwhod daemons were
dying unexpectedly and that they could not be restarted with a

        /sbin/init.d/rwho start

command (only a reboot worked).

The only response was received from Knut Helleboe
(Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com), who suggested checking our uerf -o full
-R output and checking for patches. Unfortunately these kind
suggestions yielded no information.

A check of the times involved eventually suggested two
possibilities:

1) The /var/adm/wtmp files were cleaned out on some of the machines at
about the right times. Do we need a safer method of doing this or do
we need to stop rwhod before doing it? (We've never had a problem
before to my knowledge.)

2) An unauthorized linux box was attached to our campus network (not
the OSF/1 subnetwork, which is all I manage) at about the right time
also, running rwhod. (It has now been disconnected.) Could this be
the cause?

Since we have had no rwhod crashes since Dec. 6, this is the
best summary I can give. Any further suggestions would be much
appreciated.
