Cron dying

Cron is dying on us every day - not at the same time as far as we can
tell. There is no log info or clue in cron log or syslog.dated or the
INN logs. How can we find out what is causing it to die? We have not
added any cron jobs for at least a month.
As a temp fix we will write a shell script to see if cron is running and
if not then restart it with /sbin/init.d/cron start but of course
that cannot be a cron job!
We are running 3.0b as an internet alpha server 1000 4/200.
