Thanks to Tim Janes and Hellebo Knut for your prompt replies and
commiserations to Ian Piumarta for having the same problem.
The solution is that there is a known bug in (at least) 3.0b in cron
which dies if Dump dies for whatever reason. Dec support have a patch
and they are sending it to us on a DAT.
