Thanks to all who replied to my query. It turns out that the problem
was as follows:
/jim8 was not mounted on the dir /jim8, but on a softlink /jim8
which was linked to the dir /wren8. A similar situation existed for the
other partitions I was trying to mount. Apparently, nfs doesn't like
mounting partitions which are really links. I'm not sure how this all
happened in the first place, as I have not always been the sysadmin for
this system. Changing the mount points on jim to be real dirs solved
the problem.
