I was at the Fall DECUS and one of the DEC people told me that there was
a internal DEC cookbook on tuning ADVFS. I haven't been able to find such a doc
and have asked my sales support to check and they haven't been successful
either. The support center referred me to the sys perf tuning manual. Has
anyone heard of such a thing?
0) We are running a POP mail server on a DEC 2100 server. It handles
about about 110,000 local mail deliveries/day (525,000/week). We have a
system with a couple of extremely large file systems (one contains over
200,000 small (<2K) files) and we are using ADVFS. We would like some
pointers to info on how to tune our ADVFS. Sect 3.6.1.3 in "System Tuning
and Performance Management" (AA-Q0R3D-TE) doesn't give us anything
useful.
1) Do the VFS tuning and configuration considerations described in
"System Tuning and Performance Management" (AA-Q0R3D-TE), section 3.6.1.1
apply when using ADVFS? What is the interaction between VFS and AdvFS?
2) Do the UNIX File System tuning and configuration considerations
described in "System Tuning and Performance Management" (AA-Q0R3D-TE),
section 3.6.1.2 apply when using ADVFS?
3) Do the UBC Subsystem considerations apply when using ADVFS?
(section 3.4.1)
4) Do the Metadata and Namei Buffer Cache considerations apply?
(section 3.4.1.3)
5) KERNEL: what is the OSF equivalent for maximum # of systemwide open files
('ofiles' in HP-UX)?
The POLYCENTER AdvFS Utilities Version 3.2 Release Notes describes how to
increase the metadata extent size for file domains that will contain over
200,000 files (ours will contain about 350,000 files). The Release Notes recommend extending the metadata extent size (using the
'addvol -x #pages device domain_name' command), but do not tell how to display
the current size. How do we display the current size of the metadata table for
a particular file domain?
TIA.
