Sorry that this summary is so late. There were a ton of replies that
came in just before the holidays (and vacation).
The bulk of responses indicated good results with the Young Minds
product called "CD Studio". The hardware is basically a PC with
its own hard drive and CD-ROM burner that looks like a tape drive
to the system. It looks like a very nice solution if price is not
an issue (over $10K).
Some folks are creating an ISO 9660 filesystem image on their systems and
then transferring it to a PC (or MAC) for burning.
The rest are using the "Gear" CDROM mastering software product from
Elektroson (1-800-606-6116), and various off-the-shelf CD-R drives.
I also discovered that there are two USENET newsgroups dedicated to CDROM
recording specifically, they are:
comp.publish.cdrom.hardware
comp.publish.cdrom.software
At this point, I am seriously looking into obtaining a Sony Spressa drive
and using the Gear software. I do seem to be having problems getting an
actual quote for Gear out of Elektroson or their distributors, which isn't
a great sign.
Feel free to send e-mail if you think I've left out some detail which would
be significant to someone reading this summary. I've tried to condense the
ton of material that I've received.
