network problems

Hi managers,
this is a question for people familiar with network problems.

In our lab we have an Alpha station (OSF/1 v2.0), a Digital
Printserver and several pc's. All are connected to a thinnet
which is bridged through a repeater to a thick ethernet and
to the outer world.
Physically they all are on the same cable few feet apart.
Unfortunately they are virtually far away because they belong
to three different subnets (to be more precise: some belong to
141.108.5.n, some to 141.108.4.n and others to 141.108.3.n);
why? because they were connected at different times and, probably,
there were not addresses available in the previous subnet.

Now the problem: the link between the machines works perfectly
unless (and this happens more often than desirable) the
NAMESERVER of the domain (which, if I understand, is defined
by 141.108.n.n) is for whatever reason unreachable
or down. Such impossibility of link persists even if
the machines try to connect using the i.p. address (the four-number
as opposed to the symbolic word address). Of course this does not happen
to machines belonging to the same subnet.

And now the question: is there a simple way (besides the trivial
change of addresses whose request may lead to unpleasent reactions
from the network administrators) to solve the problem?
For example, the subnet mask of all the machines is now defined as
255.255.255.0, will I solve the problem changing it to 255.255.0.0?
Or should I configure the Alpha as a local nameserver; will this
operation lead to conflicts with the domain NAMESERVER?

Thank you for your help and I will SUMMARY.
