Hi,
A few days ago I asked :

Hi,
Today I met with a unplesant thing. When I try to run a batch file like

 mt -f /dev/rmt0h rew
 vdump -0uf /dev/nrmt0h /usr/users/comp
 vdump -0uf /dev/nrmt0h /usr/users/student
 vdump -0uf /dev/nrmt0h /usr/users/academic
 vdump -0uf /dev/nrmt0h /usr/users/others
 vdump -0uf /dev/nrmt0h /usr/users/personel
 mt -f /dev/nrmt0h weof

for a while it stoped , saying

dev/fset : comp_domain#comp
type : advfs
advfs id : 0x30c9e0b4.000a7830.1
vdump: Date of last level 0 dump: the start of the epoch
vdump: Dumping directories

vdump: unable to write to device </dev/nrmt0h>; [5] I/O error
vdump: do you want to retry? y

vdump: unable to write to device </dev/nrmt0h>; [5] I/O error
vdump: do you want to retry? y

vdump: unable to write to device </dev/nrmt0h>; [5] I/O error

....

and

usr/users/staff/balci#>mt fsf 0

Error on device named /dev/nrmt0h - Place TLZ06 tape drive unit #40 ONLINE

Do you have any idea ? I tried different tape cassets, but same thing. Is
this means tape driver is out-of-order ??
Sincerely.
murat.

First of all, I understand that this problem is not a rare problem. Many
people has met with this problem, like :

Jon Green - User Support <jon_at_worf.netins.net>

Is this an Exabyte tape drive by chance? I had this same thing happen
on our Alphaserver 1000 with an Exabyte 8mm tape drive, and we had to
replace the tape drive. Luckily, it was still under warranty.

// Although my tape is 4mm

This happened to me once. I had to power off and back on the machine
the tape drive is connected to, the tape drive, and other devices connected
to the machine. It looked like the system had lost the SCSI device.

My TLZ06 seems pretty flakey, too. I get errors similar to yours once
every few months. A reboot has always cleared them up.

// Also when I rebooted the system, it worked fine, but at the first
// backup process same thing occured towards the end of filesystems.

Also ,

Hellebo Knut <Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com>

1. Check the 'uerf -o full -R' output.
2. Check 'scu sho dev c x t y l z' where x is controller number, y is SCSI
target, z is logical unit for the tapedrive.
3. Also do a 'tapex' to check if there's something physically wrong with the
device.

// I used uerf and show some hardware error messages. I think problem is
// big and somehow we'll change the tape driver.

Also ,

Christophe DIARRA <diarra_at_ipno.in2p3.fr> advised :

I have solved the problem (with the assistance of DEC) on a DEC 300
by switching the "jumper #4" to "ON" on the DAT. You have to open the
computer to do it.

Not sure you have exactely the same problem, but this is just a idea.

// But since I have a spare tape driver I think I'll change it .

Thanx for all.

Sincerely
murat.
