Hello Everyone;
My original question is:
> What does it take to make a DEC PCI fast ethernet card (DE500) to work
> under Digital Unix 3.2C?
The answer is to take these steps:
1) shutdown the machine, reboot it with command:
>>> b -fi "genvmunix"
The card will be recognized by the generic kernel.
2) rebuild a custom kernel afterwards ("doconfig" is the easiest way, of
couse).
3) A firmware upgrade might be needed for some older versions. Mine says:
vmunix: Firmware revision: 4.3
and it did not need a firmware upgrade. (My machine is only 2 days
old, anyway :-) ).
It worked for me: both standard and fast ethernet interfaces appeared
in /usr/adm/messages.
Many thanks to:

for their prompt reply and generous help.
P.S. I am glad to hear that DEC will not drop their UNIX. Maybe some a
day Digital Unix-related documents will be included in *Digital* hardware
shipment too :-).
