My original question:

>Seems that the light indicators get stuck with a number 5 reading.

Seems that the Number 5 error reading indicates a problem with the
external network interface, i.e. the transceiver that I was using (an
AUI -> BNC).

The defective transceiver was replaced with a new one, and the problem
was settled/fixed.
