help on QIC 150

hello all,
i 'm working with an alpha station 200 digital unix 3.2C.
i installed a qic 150 (IBM QIC 1000) tape drive. there's no problem to read a tape comming from various system, but i can't write my own tape.
any time i try do do it i get the following message :

        tar: IO error.

if someone could help me...
