protected passwd files ?

Dear colleagues,

I'm looking for an easy way to protect my passwd file from 'crackers'.
I know the mkpasswd command, and it does solve the problem, but also
prevents people from accessing other info from the passwd file, e.g. user
name etc.
On the other hand of course there is the complete enhanced security
package, but i looks so huge and complex, just to protect one single file.

Is there something in DU, comparable to AIX, where you simply see a !
character in stead of the complete password ?

Thanks in advance,

Marc
