I asked advice on how to disklabel a disk unit (RZ29B) when its entry
in /etc/disktab does not appear to be correct.
First of all, this Question appears to be very Frequently Asked and
http:/www-archive.stanford.edu/lists/mlists.html
should contain lots of info (but I did not check).
The problem is easily solved if one does not look too critically
into the data obtained by letting disklabel reading what it needs
from the disk unit itself (disklabel -rw /dev/rrzna dummy). According
to a kind insider (Alan Rollow), several geometry definitions
are lies, but they are not used anyhow...
After receiving the responses from the list that is what I successfully did:
1) disklabel -z /dev/rrz1a # before the advice I had messed the
# label too far
2) disklabel -rw /dev/rrz1a XXXX #to read the configuration
#from the unit forcing NOT to
#use /etc/disktab
3) disklabel -re /dev/rrz1a # to customize the partitions but NOT
# mess with the geometry; I eventually
# changed the XXXX into RZ29B and rpm
# but just for aesthetic reasons...
Then just for helping other people not familiar with the procedure:
4) newfs /dev/rz1x # where the x's are the used partitions
# in my case three: a, g and h
5) edit /etc/fstab # to define the filesystem mounting data
6) mount -a # to mount the filesystems
