Hi Gurus,
Here was the question:
I would like to perform some system tuning and following directions
from "System Tuning and Performance Management" I tried to use
dbx -k /vmunix /dev/mem in our three machines in order to change
some kernel parameters. In the first machine, which runs DU
V3.2C (Rev. 148) I faced no problem. But in the other two
machines I got the following error messages:
--------
dbx version 3.11.6
Type 'help' for help.
l3 address 0xffffffff9be38000 not mapped, pte 0x0
program is not active
Exiting due to error during startup
for the one that is running DU V3.0B (Rev. 358.78) and
--------
dbx version 3.11.4
Type 'help' for help.
dbx: fatal error: cannot debug /vmunix (did you specify a non-existing cor
e file?)
for the one that is running DU V2.0 (Rev. 240).
Any ideas of what is going on?

In the case of DU V2.0 I was trying to perform the change after
logging in as normal user and then su'ing to root. This does not
work. I should have logged in as root from the beggining.
Concerning DU 3.0B there is a bug that does not allow dynamical
changes in the kernel parameters due to "... a bug in the 3.0 kloadsrv, in which
it saved state information in pageable memory rather than wired memory...",
as stressed by Martin. There is a patch for this (OSFV305-206-1), which
is not available by anonymous ftp. Contact Digital service. Alternatively,
one can edit the kernel configuration file and rebuild a new kernel.
