changing default C complier to gcc

I obtained a copy of gcc and would like it to be the default complier for
any c programs.

I put it in a directory /usr/GNU

What I cannot figure out however is how to reset make so that it uses the
new gcc instead of the old cc.

I think it must be to do with changing the MACRO settings for make, but I'm
not sure.

Any suggestings are appreciated.
