Summary: fast ethernet performance

Last week, I sent mail saying that we were only seeing 55 Mbit/second
performance on the DE500 fast ethernet components.

As it turns out, I believe that low performance is only evident on
multiprocessors. We connected a single-processor 2100 and a
single-processor 250-4/266 via a hub and saw 85-86 Mbit/second (using
TTCP). The multiprocessor systems still only see 55-56 Mbit/second. I
suspect it's some problem concerning locking overhead in the driver,
but haven't looked into it too far yet.

Btw, we found the DEC DE500 cards for $179 from Sparco
(www.sparco.com).
