There was a problem with our mail server, so in order for me to
be sure I am resending this message. I am really sorry if some
of you are seeing it for the second time.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to identify the problem with a DEC 3000 300X Workstation,
which came with the DEC OSF/1 operating system. The system is failing
the SCC (Serial Communication Controller), which belongs to the
initial power tests. The DEC 3000 Model 300X AXP I/O subsystem
includes two SCC chips that control the mouse keyboard, and serial
communications.

The way it looks now, the most probable thing needed is a motherboard
swap, especially concerning the fact that the SCC module is not a
separate card but it is hardwired on the motherboard. I am trying to
identify which pair of chips are responsible for the SCC just in case
we could only substitute these 2 chips and not the whole thing.
I could have taken out the motherboard and follow the wires, but I
did not do it, because Digital has put some pretty weird screws
at certain points. In my opinion, one of the following four options
is responsible for the SCC. Can somebody help at this point??

*Which chips are responsible for the SCC?
========================================================================
UC80234Q GD | ITA27 B3 |
DU 9347 |2 (1 pair) ST 93B401|2 (1 pair)
SR 34645 | MALAYSIA |

Fil-Mag | Fil-Mag |
23Z109SM |4 (2 pairs) 106 SM |4 (2 pairs)
TWN 9417 | TWN 9421|
========================================================================

*Does anyone how much it would cost to buy separately the 2 SCC chips?
*Does anyone know how much it would cost to buy a brand new motherboard?
*Does anyone know any vendors that produce what I need except Digital, and
 what are the prices?

I have already called Digital, and they are very helpful over the phone,
but they charge $500 minimum for a field engineer to come and look at the
computer.

I would really appreciate your input.

Regards,
George P.
