After reading all these responses and taking your advice into consideration, I
had no problems at all:
renamed /sys/conf/BAD-NAME to /sys/conf/GOOD-NAME
renamed /sys/conf/BAD-NAME.list to /sys/conf/GOOD-NAME.list
renamed /sys/BAD-NAME to /sys/GOOD-NAME
editted /etc/rc.config and changed the HOSTNAME to GOOD-NAME
[held breath]
rebooted
Luckily for me this system is stand-alone at present and there were no email or
network configuration files that needed to be changed.
