specific pid -> runaway sendmail process?

My OS: OSF1 V3.0 358 alpha [a 2-cpu, don't know the model number]
sendmail version: 5.65 (1.1.3.6) [yeah, yeah.. I will upgrade]

Places consulted before emailing the list: the FAQ(s) and the list
archives.

My problem: sendmail turns into a runaway process for (possibly)
unknown reasons -- chewing up 99+% cpu and never ending.

The only thing I have noticed is that at least with the last 3 times
this has happened (over the last week), the pid has always been 12438.

So, does anyone have answers or pointers to answers for the following:

1) What's going on?

2) How does OSF/1 allocate pids? It is unlikely that pids rolled
over (on one or both CPUs) in this time.

3) Has anyone experienced anything similar to this problem?

thanks,
Jason
