Many people suggested the following:

First of all, I neglected to mention that I am using an AlphaServer 1000,
with obviously no fantastic video capabilities, without additional hardware.

I needed to append -screen 800 (The best built-in video will do on this
machine) to /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers

local:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X -nice -2 -screen 800

(or just :0 instead of local:0, local:0 is supposed to be faster, but I
have yet to notice a difference, if I needed to do something else to
increase the speed from extremely slow to slow, please let me know.)
