device-specific video card Xdec setup

I'm having trouble trying to convince the Xdec process that the Qvision
card on my 2000/300 should only come up as an 8-bit server, and not as 24.

I've commented out the "Triton" entry in the /usr/lib/X11/Xserver.conf
file, added an args < -vclass0 PseudoColor > entry, and added an entry as
below:
        < _dec_ffb lib_dec_ffb.so >
for the device-specific library. The system seems to still be coming up
in 24-bit mode. Using lsof doesn't show the above file to be open. XV
and Netscape both come up in 24-bit mode.

I've set up a couple of systems now, and the device-specific modifications
to the Xserver.conf file don't seem to be well documented. I don't mind
being told to read the Fine Manual for next time, but I don't seem to be
able to locate the right FM. Where should I be looking for this
information when I set up a new system?

Thanks,

Phil
