lockf problem on mail files

Dear List,

After we upgraded our cluster to DU 3.2D we started to have severe
mail delivery problems. Our mail spool, i.e., /var/spool/mail is on
a disk on our fileserver, an AlphaServer 200 5/250. On all machines
/var/spool/mail has been changed to a link pointing to /home/spool/mail
and /home is the mounting point for this "cluster disk". This has
worked without problems for years. After the upgrade mail can often
not be delivered. The syslog.dated/.../mail.log file has two lines for
each miss, like

Mar 5 12:43:51 alf binmail[4757]: cannot lockf /usr/spool/mail/userid
Mar 5 12:43:51 alf sendmail[4758]: AA03446: to=<userid_at_alf.nbi.dk>, delay=00:
37:08, stat=Deferred

and so it continues. Most users still get their mail, but how can I
cure this for the unhappy few?

So, has anybody seen this problem and knows a fix? Where can I find
information on lockf, what process and node is locking?

Thanks,

Bjorn
