Hi Managers!
We are running an Alpha 2100 at OSF1 v2.0b (going to 3.2C soon) with
enhanced security. Ideally, we would like to mount a DOC CD and make it
available to PCs via NFS. Is this possible? Is there software available? If
it is, what is it?
Any help you can provide would be great!
TIA,
Sheryl Campbell

SUMMARY:
--------
The solution most recommended was to download Samba (address included in
full-text below). I also found that there is significant documentation via
the WWW on Samba-related issues. In addition, there is a listserv dedicated
to Samba.
What we ended up using (at least temporarily) is using LAN Workplace Client
(suggested by Javier Aida) since we had it available to us. So far, it works
great!
Our biggest concern in all of this is security. We are running enhanced
security and wrapper and worry about people "spoofing" someone else's login.
For right now, there are just two of us getting at the CD-ROM on an
as-needed basis, but we would eventually like to allow our users to utilize
space on the Alpha for extremely large documents generated off our database.
I will still be searching for information on PC-NFS security, which I
haven't yet been able to track down.
Again, thanks to all; I am new to Unix and this list, and have found myself
suddenly a System Administrator due to personnel changes (to think, only two
months before I was in Marketing Communications!) Everyone has been a superb
help!

Sheryl,
If you really want to use NFS, it si possible. WATCOM PC-NFS is available via
the internet. What you really want to use is samba
(
ftp://nimbus.anu.edu.au/pub/tridge/samba/), a free SMB server.

Hi, Sheryl
As i understand, you just need a PC NFS client. I can suggest you to use
Chameleon NFS (it worked just fine for me), Reflection NFS (i don't remember
the exact name, distributor: Walker Richer Quinn), or, if your PC's are
using Netware, you can usr LanWorkplace NFS client.
Hope it helps
Javier

I recommend you look into installing Samba on your Alpha. Then your
Unix partitions will show up on the network as a Lan manager share.
We've been doing that exact thing here for almost a year now with
no problems.

Hi
I'd be interested in your summary. I'm not solid in my understanding
of the issues, but I believe that there's no such thing as a DOS CD.
There's ISO-9660 format, and High Sierra, and I think one or both
are readable by DOS. DU also reads both formats, so you can do
a mount on the Alpha and export it as though it were a UFS partition.
Like I say, my understanding is limited. Please do post a summary.

If I understood you correctly,
you have DOS CD( Rockridge compatible ) or cdfs format.
These can be mounted on DEC OSF system ( say onto /cdrom directory )
with -o rrip and -t cdfs options
( see man page of mount on DEC )
Then export /cdrom
Use can XFS ( Public domain) client s/w or PC-NFS etc.
on your PC and things should work alright.

Yes, it is possible. There are at least two commercial NFS clients for
DOS, as I know, one from Sun (os course) and another fro FTP software. At
the shareware level, you can try one of the clients available at
ftp://oak.oakland.edu/SimTel/msdos/nfs
If you use Windows for Workgroups, Samba may be a best choice. I do not
use it yet, but there is a summary about its use under OSF/1 (ooops, DU) at
http://www.ornl.gov/cts/archives/mailing-lists/alpha-osf-managers/1995/
12/msg00029.html (too long for a single line).
To use Samba, you will need the MS TCP/IP support, available on
Microsoft's ftp server. I knew the location, but they changed the
directory structure, dig at
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com.
I hope it helps.

Hello,
For this you need to do 2 things: First recompile the kernel including the
ISO9660 file system option. You can do this using the doconfig command. Then
you have to activate the pcnfsd, an NFS daemon designed to work with PC and Mac
clients, in general, clients, which do not support UNIX authentification. You
can configure your system for use with pcnfsd using the nfssetup command.
Hope this helps a bit ...

Cheryl,
Seems to be simple:
mount the cdrom in /something
add /something to /etc/exports
I hope this helps.

You may want to check out samba. It uses NetBios over TCP.
Samba will do this (ans a whole lot more)
It can be ftp'ed from nimbus.anu.edu.au. Check out the readme's
