how to transparently span fs across disks

If this is in a FAQ, please point me to it...

We anticipate our newsserver to grow very quickly very soon and we would
like to expand beyond the 4 gigs dedicated to it (a 4gig seagate
barracuda). Secondly, we dont necessarily want to waste entire drives
for larger newsgroup hierarchies (i.e, we could just put a 4gig for alt.
and a 4 gig for the rest, etc.) because this would cause much waste.

Therefore, how do we use multiple drives to provide transparent access to
a logical ufs of size equal to the sum of the drives? We dont want to
use advfs (for obvious reasons).

Also, does anyone know of (this is perhaps a question for another place)
a way to generate cumulative resource usage for a particular process?
For example, if we want to know exactly what percentage of CPU time is
dedicated to INN or more useful perhaps, what percentage of I/O load is
dedicated to INN. Any other method than polling processes using ps?

- Thank you!
