There are several good text based file managers including:
emacs in dired mode (available from gatekeeper.dec.com or
other GNU sources)
Hans sent some source code which he wrote for a very
flexible/reconfigurable curses file manager
midnight commander from GNU provides a tool which will be
very familiar for anyone familiar with Norton CommanderTM.
MC is available from many sites including sunsite.unc.edu
scan: a tool written for Ultrix. I didn't find a copy of it,
but it's probably on the net somewhere.
Lynx: the FM version, has a Dired capability? I didn't find Lynx.
utree: I didn't find this either.
midnight commander was suggested fairly early on and I found
it fairly easy to work with so it's being evaluated now.
Thanks again to all who responded.
