lockf problem on mail files, summary

Yesterday I observed that mail could not be delivered to some of our
users, and that the problem was logged in the syslog.dated/.../mail.log
files as

Mar 5 12:43:51 alf binmail[4757]: cannot lockf /usr/spool/mail/userid
Mar 5 12:43:51 alf sendmail[4758]: AA03446: to=<userid_at_alf.nbi.dk>, delay=00:
37:08, stat=Deferred

Consequently I asked the list for help, and help arrived almost immediately.
20 minutes after I sent my mail Richard Jackson (rjackson_at_gmu.edu) told me
to do

> (cd /var/spool/mail;cp -p userid UUU;mv UUU userid)

to remove the locks so mail could be delivered. As a long-term solution,

>Do the following...
>
>rcmgr set MAILLOCKING 5
>
>This enable lockf and lock file locking. This is desired if you use NFS.
>The default is MAILLOCKING 0 which only uses lockf. Make sure you have
>statd and lockd running.

I had almost identical answers from

Ronald Ali-Khan (khan_at_informatik.fh-hamburg.de)
Chang Koon Wang (cceckw_at_nus.sg)
Knut Helleboe (Knut.Hellebo_at_nho.hydro.com)

too. Knut also pointed out the existence of mail_manual_setup(7)
which I had not seen.

Needless to say, my problem is now solved, and once again this list has
proven to be just great. Thanks to everybody,

Bjorn
