My original question was:
>We're running elm under DU 3.2. The mail spool is on an DU 3.2 file system,
>and the mail spool directory has permissions rwxrwxrwt and each mail file
>has permissions rw-------. When you exit elm with all the messages deleted,
>elm gives the "Problems restoring permissions of folder /var/spool/mail/user"
>warning (it still keeps the empty folder with the correct permissions!).
>It's fine when you exit elm with at least one message. We didn't have this
>problem when the mail spool was on an Ultrix 4.2 file system.
I received three suggestions:
1. Upgrade elm. As a recall, it was a problem in elm fixed in new versions.
2. I had this same problem, and then I recompiled elm using all three
file-locking methods there is available to configure. Works just fine
after that. We're running 3.2C
3. The symptoms could stem from the way you're locking the mailfiles. Try a
'rcmgr set MAILLOCKING 5' and restart sendmail (also check the manpages
for mail_manual_setup).
I recompiled elm (V2.4, Patch 25) using all three file locking methods. And
the problem is gone. I did try suggestion 3, but that didn't seem to solve
our problem.
