INND does not recognize FQDN in hosts.nntp, only IP... help

I am running INN1.4unoff4 under OSF 3.2.
My hosts.nntp file contains FQDN (full internet names) names of the "feeders,"
however innd every time hands over the connection to nnrpd. Only if I put IP
addresses in hosts.nntp, innd takes care of the connection.

What might be the problem? Where does innd fail to match the name in
hosts.nntp with the result of the lookup?
