Dear Managers,

Responses were received from

Mike Iglesias <iglesias_at_draco.acs.uci.edu>
Niels Kokholm <kokholm_at_math.ku.dk>

Mike suggested that it was X, rather than xdm, that was failing. He
suggested that the core dump would indicate the program that was failing.

Niels mentioned that he had seen error 2816 when too many X terminals were
attached (not my problem: the workstation itself supported the only attached X
terminal).

Digital Software Support spent some time analyzing my core dump (it didn't
make much sense to me) and decided that the dump was caused by a failure to
allocate memory on the graphics card (which actually is integrated into my
motherboard). If this is error 2816, maybe that explains Niels's problem.

        DEC suggested 3 possible causes:

        i) Netscape v2.0
ii) OSF v3.2 (a bug in pixmap mapping)
        iii) hardware

Since Netscape v2.0 and OSF/1 v3.2 continue to run smoothly on the rest of my
LAN while the afflicted station is getting steadily worse, we decided on
option iii: hardware. Field Service is replacing my motherboard; hopefully
that will fix the problem.
