To my question:

Hi everybody

Does somebody have good experience with
bootpd.

I try to watch the bootp requests on an DU V2.0 server. (DECStation 3000/600)
How can i monitor bootd's requests ?

Starting bootpd with flag: -d # did not the expected work.

Any hints would be apreciated.

Thank's
Peter

The solution is as the following:

        start bootpd /sr/sbin/bootpd -s -d -d -d -d (strge cmd lne sntx .., isn't it?)

check the configuration of syslogd /etc/syslogd.conf
        maybe restart the syslogd

the debug info will be written in /var/adm/syslog.dated/XX-XXX-time/daemon.log

too much recently. If v3.2 experience is relevant, the file to tail is
usr/var/adm/syslog.dated/foo/daemon.log - the following "-d 4" logging

Mar 14 17:11:00 apollo bootpd[20926]: version 2.3.dec.5
Mar 14 17:11:00 apollo bootpd[20926]: bootptab mtime: Thu Mar 14 15:46:47
1996
Mar 14 17:11:00 apollo bootpd[20926]: reading "/etc/bootptab"
Mar 14 17:11:00 apollo bootpd[20926]: read 2 entries (1 hosts) from
"/etc/bootpt
ab"
Mar 14 17:11:00 apollo bootpd[20926]: recvd pkt from IP addr 0.0.0.0
Mar 14 17:11:00 apollo bootpd[20926]: bootptab mtime: Thu Mar 14 15:46:47
1996
Mar 14 17:11:00 apollo bootpd[20926]: request from Ethernet address
08.00.2B.93.

Cheers,

John Nebel

Try restarting syslogd as well...

you have to type enough -d's to monitor bootp requests. I think a minimum
of 4 is necessary. The max is 9, I believe.

so, something like this:

/usr/sbin/bootpd -s -d -d -d -d

have fun

Hi Peter,
note that each instance of -d increases the debugging output level,
so add multiple "-d"s. Next have a look at your /etc/syslog.conf and
add the lines ...

daemon.debug /var/adm/syslog.dated/daemon.log
daemon.debug /dev/console

..., run xconsole and tell syslog to read its configtab by running (as
root)

kill -1 `cat /var/run/syslog.pid`

this should give you a clue what's going on.

hope this helps,
Winfried

This should be recorded in your daemon.log file

    Increase the debug level - either with '-d -d' or '-d 2' (or 3). I'm
not sure which one is applicable to the bootpd that comes with OSF/1, I
use a few different BOOTP servers.

This will work, however, the log entries will be sent to
syslogd. Try looking in /var/adm/messages, or /var/adm/syslog.dated/*
depending on how your syslog is configured.
