tty locking up on 3000/800

I use uucp via the serial port on my mail gateway (a 3000/800 running DEC
OSF/1 V3.0 (Rev. 347)) to to get Internet email to and from my internal
network.

Ever so often, the tty port (the one with the DB25 connector, not the RJ
connector) will lock up and not allow me or my internal uucp host to log in to
transfer files. In the past, I've cleared this up by rebooting (restarting
the uugetty didn't seem to help). This time, however, it's March 1996, and I
haven't installed the clock patch :-( I'd like to avoid the traditional
reboot. Anyone have hints on what I should try (short of reboot) in order
re-enable my tty port?

Many thanks. Here's my inittab entries, followed by my uugettydefs:

inittab:
  u1:23:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -t 30 ttyd1 9600 vt100 #UUCP
  u0:23:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -t 30 ttyd0 M9600 #UUCP
