Working Ghostscript 2.6.x on DU 3.2x???

I give up. I've tried building first ghostscript 2.6.2 and then back down
to 2.6.1 with the following compiler/switch combos:
    
    - cc : -g, -O, neither
    - cc -migrate : -g, -O, neither
    - gcc 2.7.2: -g, -O, both, neither

in all cases, gs dies with a different error (unaligned access, bad GC,
blah blah blah).

Anybody having better luck??? What am I missing here?
