Thanks for all the replies (original query included below).
There were a lot of people saying sendmail 8.7.5 worked fine on dUNIX
3.2d, and as I suspected, a reply that confirmed my guess:

checking /usr/include/resolv.h, it did appear very old (OSF/1 1.2)!
thanks again

original message:
We are in the process of setting up sendmail 8.7.5 (from 8.6.11) and
are having some weird problems with the new sendmail.cf files
(generated from the new m4 scripts). On the SUN sparc station clients
things seem to work as expected (mail sent to the central hub),
however on the DEC alphas, sendmail.cf files (identical to the SUN
client files) fail to direct sendmail to deliver *any* mail to the
mail hub, and attempt to deliver all mail locally. This is despite
the lines in the sendmail cf file:
DRcnsmail.cns.ed.ac.uk
DHcnsmail.cns.ed.ac.uk
The sendmail was identically compiled on both architectures, in a
similar manner to all older versions of sendmail (which gave no
differences). One difference between architectures is the bind that
is run (sunos: 4.8.3; dUNIX: 4.9.3-B9P1+), and one of the README files
in the sendmail compile instructions warns about weird (but
unspecified) happenings that occur with resolv.h libresolv version
differences - I assume this is ok in a clean dUNIX 3.2 distribution?
Can anyone think of anything I may be doing wrong, or
have overlooked with the new version of sendmail? I know I haven't
provided a great deal of background info as the relevant procedures
and files are way too long (m4 scripts, cf files etc.), but I would
appreciate any advice people may have.
The DEC I'm testing the new sendmail on is a DEC3000 500S, running
dUNIX 3.2.
