SUMMARY: Illegal IP address being used by hardware??

First thanks to everyone who responded to this query. I received about
15 responses, and all were very good suggestions, many of which I took
under serious consideration.

The simplist solution to the problem (not needing to find the offending
PC ethernet card) turned out to be the following by Pat O'Brien. It
also turns out that the solution was under my nose all the time in my
old Ultrix 4.4 box. The rc.local ifconfig field in this setup is
exactly as Pat suggested below, and this machine as never reported the
Illigal IP addressmessage.
