tar - output to a file

Hello everybody,

I am using k shell (ksh) on Digital Unix 3.0b. When I am executing
following tar command, output of tar is not going to file1.out.

tar rvf /dev/rmt0h * > file1.out

The same command when I execute on SCO Unix, I get the output in
file1.out
Anybody know, what could be the reason?
