If there is no operator to broadcast to, the backup aborts. I minimize the problem by DEFINE SYS$COMMAND OPA0: REPLY/ENABLE=TAPES DEASSIGN SYS$COMMAND and leave OPA0: /BROADCAST I hope you know that CTRL-F2 toggles the 'operator window display' mode off and on. This is the default setup on both xdm and CDE based systems. If you're running something else you may want to look into how you can use dxconsole or xconsole to capture the console messages in a window. I'm not sure it is possible to disable them since many such messages originate from within the kernel. >From unx.dec.com!vsp Wed Apr 24 14:04:35 1996 Return-Path: <vsp_at_unx.dec.com> Received: by smuhep1.physics.smu.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.28.1 #28.12) id <m0uC9rf-000JmNC_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu>; Wed, 24 Apr 96 14:04 CDT Received: from peewee.unx.dec.com by mail13.digital.com (5.65v3.2/1.0/WV) id AA16012; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:56:28 -0400 Received: by peewee.unx.dec.com (5.65/MS-040293); id AA09147; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:56:26 -0400 Received: by everest.unx.dec.com; id AA08677; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:58:10 -0400 Message-Id: <9604241858.AA08677_at_everest.unx.dec.com> To: jain_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu (Rakesh Jain) Cc: vsp_at_everest.unx.dec.com Subject: Re: console messages In-Reply-To: Your message of "Wed, 24 Apr 96 12:57:46 CDT." <m0uC8p0-000JmNC_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu> Date: Wed, 24 Apr 96 14:58:10 -0400 From: vsp_at_unx.dec.com X-Mts: smtp Status: OR If you aare using CDE ADK, you may want to start 'dxconsole -daemon'. It is started by default when using DECwindows environment. This would work when you have graphics console. For non-graphics console, or in general, you may want to review your /etc/syslog.conf. You may want to redefine some debug messages that by default go to /dev/console. This file is used to configure the syslogd daemon that logs system messages. hope this helps, vipul patel vsp_at_unx.dec.com >From vlsi.bu.edu!jrw Wed Apr 24 13:47:48 1996 Return-Path: <jrw_at_vlsi.bu.edu> Received: by smuhep1.physics.smu.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.28.1 #28.12) id <m0uC9aD-000JmNC_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu>; Wed, 24 Apr 96 13:46 CDT Received: from vlsi by acs-mail.bu.edu (8.6.13/BU_Server-1.2) id OAA87575; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:18:53 -0400 Received: from apu by vlsi; (5.65v3.2/1.1.8.2/14Sep95-0103PM) id AA31380; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:19:45 -0400 Received: by apu; (5.65v3.2/1.1.8.2/22Dec95-0358PM) id AA15278; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:19:45 -0400 From: Jay Wasserman <jrw_at_vlsi.bu.edu> Message-Id: <9604241819.AA15278_at_apu> Subject: Re: console messages To: jain_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:19:45 -0400 (EDT) In-Reply-To: <m0uC8p0-000JmNC_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu> from "Rakesh Jain" at Apr 24, 96 12:57:46 pm Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Length: 308 Status: OR do a man syslogd you need to reconfigure your syslog.conf.... -j >From keokuk.unh.edu!pas Wed Apr 24 13:13:33 1996 Return-Path: <pas_at_keokuk.unh.edu> Received: by smuhep1.physics.smu.edu (/\==/\ Smail3.1.28.1 #28.12) id <m0uC94F-000JmNC_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu>; Wed, 24 Apr 96 13:13 CDT Received: from keokuk.unh.edu by unh.edu with SMTP id AA06386 (5.67b+/IDA-1.5 for <jain_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu>); Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:13:30 -0400 Received: (from pas_at_localhost) by keokuk.unh.edu (8.7.5/8.7.3) id OAA01352 for jain_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu; Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:13:29 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199604241813.OAA01352_at_keokuk.unh.edu> Subject: Re: console messages To: jain_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 14:13:28 -0400 (EDT) In-Reply-To: <m0uC8p0-000JmNC_at_smuhep1.physics.smu.edu> from "Rakesh Jain" at Apr 24, 96 12:57:46 pm From: Paul A Sand <pas_at_unh.edu> Reply-To: pas_at_unh.edu X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL25] Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Status: O Personally, I always start up `xterm -C', which puts the console messages in a terminal window instead of messing up your main screen.
