ORIGINAL POSTING:
We have few Alpha Workstations with 5gigs each. What is the best way
to backup all the files to a central machine. I am currently using
dump and rdump in the middle of the night, where there isn't much
acitvity at all. However, things are changing around here. I need to
find a more reliable way of backup data on "live" filesystems.

I have heard about Legato Networker. But cost is an issue here...
Any help would be appreciated.

REPLIES:
Quiet few people have suggested to use Advance Filesystem, and backup the
clone. Since we are only using UFS now, I need to spend some time to look
into Advanced File System. Anyone have some pointers to good documentations?

Some recommanded BUDTOOL and BUDTOOL LIVE, but at a cost
of $5500, it is more than my budget. The same goes for Legato Networker.

Most have feeled that dump/restore and vdump/vrestore are adaquate
enough. And since it doesn't cause problem that often (only few rare
cases), keep enough redunant tapes should be enough.

One other product sounds VERY interesting and it's FREE is Amanda. It can
be downloaded from:

        ftp://ftp.cs.umd.edu/pub/amanda

I am trying that out now. It is based on dump/restore.
