HP Laserjet 4M Plus switching Duplex/Simplex again

This question was asked before, but I could not find a summary.
May be the answer is too trivial. Sorry for asking again.

We have a HPlj4m+ with the HP JetDirect Network Interface
setup as remote printer.

The printcap entry uses a 'double entry' to filter ASCII to
PS
.....
lp|lp0|entry for 4:\
        :ct=dev:\
        :lp=/dev/null:\
        :of=/usr/lbin/ln03rof | lpr -P4 -h:\
        :lf=/usr/adm/lpd-errs:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/lpd0:\
        :mx#0:\
        :pw#80:\
        :pl#88:\
        :sh:
4|lp4|HPLaserJet 4m+:\
        :lp=:\
        :sh:\
        :rm=runpp1:\
        :rp=raw:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd:
.....

This works perfectly under ULTRIX 4.4, whether :lp=/dev/null:\ or :lp:\ is
set in the first entry of printcap.
It does not work with DU 3.2D.
If lp=/dev/null it core dumps in /var/spool/lpd0, if lp is left unset and
/dev/lp does not exist
lpq returns: Warning: no daemon present
the files sit in the spool directory.
Having the /dev/lp (MAKEDEV) yields
# lpr printcap
# lpq
Wed May 1 12:30:48 1996: waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)
Rank Pri Owner Job Files Total Size
1st 0 root 23 printcap 1004 bytes

But basically I don't want to go to /dev/lp I want to use only the filter.
Things like 'cat file | filter | lpr -P4' work of cause.
For now we sent all print files through the ULTRIXbox, but my
actual question is how can I change the printer sending a PCL code
to switch between SIMPLEX and DUPLEX mode.
First switching works using the printer console menu.
Sending the pcl sequence ESC l 1 S, which according to the printer manual
sets up duplex mode has no effect. None of the pcl sequences I tried
had any effect.
I put the sequence in a simple file and used lpr -P4 -h file. It gets there,
but it looks like the ESC character is not recognized.

Could somebody point me in the right direction. Thanks.
